“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.“
I Corinthians 2:14
Discernment is like a compass
Discernment is best defined as being able to “grasp and comprehend what is not evident to the average mind.” When it comes to spiritual discernment, it is a sort of gift that is given from God to those who believe and trust in Him. In Matthew 13:11, Jesus was explaining this idea to His disciples. In this passage, the Pharisees (who were the “elites” of Israel) were not able to comprehend fully what Jesus was saying because they were not true followers or believers of Jesus. The passage reads, “And he answered them, To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.” Christians are labeled as not using their minds and lacking in knowledge, by the secular world, but I beg to differ. There are many Christians that are absolutely blessed with brilliant minds and it is not due to being “educated” as the secular world deems knowledge, but have more so been blessed with God’s truth. God’s truth is based on His standards and His standards are used in so many areas of culture throughout the world. I hope to share this in my blog as well.
God states in His Word that,” All the words of my mouth are righteous; none are crooked or perverse. They are all plain to the discerning, and upright to those who find knowledge.…” Proverbs 8:8-9. Most non-believing will question what truth actually means. As Christians, we know that God is truth and defines it through His character. In Psalm 12:6 it reads, “The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” With God, seven represents the number of perfection. So for the Christian, things that are discerned as truth to us will appear to be very abnormal to non-believers. It is as plain as the difference between black and white, right and wrong, etc. They are two values that are so opposite to each other, but when it comes to discernment, Christians need to acknowledge when God is speaking to their heart and telling them when something is not lining up with His Word and will. Christians need to be aware and listen to when God is tugging at our hearts to “pay attention.”
In this blog, I will be pointing out things in our culture that are absolutely questionable from a Christian perspective. It is not to point the finger at any believer, but to make believers aware of what might actually be harmful to the Christian, on a spiritual level. As a Christian, I am not perfect, but try to live each day to please the Lord throughout my very being. We are, after all instructed to “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” Deuteronomy 6:5 . I have been seeing that there is a serious shift occurring within the Christian community. As the days grow darker and the powers of darkness are increasing, many are beginning to go astray in their spiritual walks with God. There is a lack of wisdom and discernment and I want all believers that come across my blog to be aware of all things that are contradictory to God’s Word and His will for our lives. It is simply to strengthen the knowledge of others to grow stronger, spiritually.
“And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” Deuteronomy 6:5
As I walk with the Lord, I do love the fact that in Deuteronomy 6:5, He adds in that we can love Him will all of our mind. For the doubter, the skeptic, this is proof of His existence. There is an all mighty God that is knowable and is able to communicate with His creation through the mind or as some refer to it as (consciousness). The mind is a very complex feature of humanity, but also reflects the complexity of God. It not only shows its value and importance, but it is also a valid form of worship to God! We can both love and honor Him with our thought process because the mind is very linked to the other items listed in Deuteronomy 6:5 (heart, soul and strength).
God held the children of Israel accountable for not being knowledgeable of certain things and not using the mind that He blessed humanity with. In Hosea 4:6, God uses disciplinary action with the house of Israel for not obeying His law, it reads, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you as My priests. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.” These are very stern words and it is implied that it was not a “suggestion” from God, but a command to use our minds! With that being said, I will post things that are concerning for the Christian, as they occur in our culture. They are to serve as a “red flag” and I welcome any others to contact me and share things that are also of value as discernment, for spiritual protection and growth. Just as a compass is an instrument for determining directions, God’s Word is also the compass that we use as a reference guide, journey with me as I journey with you to seeing whether some things that are popular today are actually admonished by God or actually contradict His Word. We are to guard our hearts from deception of the world. May you be richly blessed through my posts in discerning what is truth and what is not.
